The Children’s Museum of South Dakota will host the Chagall for Children Exhibit February through May. Opening Friday, February 3, 2012, this exhibit gives kids and their grown-ups an interactive look at the famed painter’s work and features reproductions of over a dozen Chagall masterpieces, all accompanied by hands-on interactive elements that allow children to explore their own creativity.
“Chagall’s work is so whimsical,” says Suzanne Hegg, Executive Director of the Children’s Museum of South Dakota. “Young children immediately pick up on the fanciful and unusual aspects of his work. He really appeals to the children’s sense of wonder and fantasy. We are very fortunate to have First Bank & Trust and Harms Oil support CMSD by bringing this unique learning opportunity and art experience to our region.“
The exhibit’s imaginative activities are as varied as Chagall’s works. For example, a fabric rendition of Chagall’s “The Rooster” lets children rearrange the bird’s colorful tail feathers. A bas-relief of “The Birthday” allows visitors to make rubbings of the artwork to take home. “The Poultry Yard” offers various soft-sculpture animal parts that children can mix and match to create their own fantasy animals.
At different stations throughout the exhibit, guests can create mosaics, weave tapestries, use touch screens to digitally alter Chagall’s masterpieces, conduct symphonies, and through the magic of video, they can even insert themselves into one his paintings.
The exhibit, originally built by the Kohl Children’s Museum located in Chicago, has been touring the country with stops at many other notable children’s museums. Cities that hosted the exhibit during its tour include Las Vegas, Miami, Pittsburgh, Kansas City, Atlanta and Manhattan.
The Chagall for Children exhibit is located on the second floor in the “Here Today, Gone Tomorrow” traveling exhibit gallery. The exhibit is free with paid admission and included with a yearly family/grandparent membership. The exhibit is supported by First Bank & Trust and Harms Oil.
