Instructions on How to Make a Nature Journal
Materials
- 1 piece of construction paper, any color
- 6-10 pieces of white paper
- Marker, crayons or pens to write on the front
- Stapler
- Optional: Tape, stickers, colored markers, stamps to decorate the front
Directions
Set the construction paper in front of you. Line up the white paper and place it on top. Fold all of the paper in half. Unfold it and line the stapler in the middle to staple it right at the fold.
This is not an exact science. You just need to make it look like a book! If you need to staple it from the outside based on the type of stapler you have, that’s ok.
How to Use a Nature Journal
It’s helpful to have a hard surface to write on such as a clipboard or piece of cardboard. Other than that, bring a writing utensil and get ready to explore!
Go for a walk and take notice of things around you. You can go to the park, around your neighborhood, or even spend time in your own backyard. At the Children’s Museum, we have a great outdoor prairie that is really fun to explore! Wherever you end up, you will be amazed at the new things you notice about your everyday surroundings!
Start by recording the date, the weather, and the time. You can also write where you are exploring.
There is not a right or wrong when using your nature journal. Make it your own.
When you find something that inspires you, take time to notice it. What color is it? How big is it? What does it feel like? Does it have a smell? You can write all of these things in your notebook.
You can also draw a sketch of it. Record any questions you might have about it. You can use these questions to research your findings when you get home.
Using a nature journal is a great hobby and a great way to take time to breathe in fresh air and stretch and move your body!
