Landscape Services Intern

Status: Part-time, hourly. Approximately 20 hours per week, flexible scheduling.

Reports to:  Maintenance Manager

Job Summary: 
In alignment with the Museum’s mission, vision, and values, the Landscape Services Intern helps ensure a clean, safe, and aesthetically pleasing outdoor environment for the guests of the Children’s Museum of South Dakota. The ideal candidate will be a responsible, self-directed, creative individual who enjoys working in a playful, team-oriented environment.

Essential Functions:  
Assist with the upkeep of all outdoor landscaping by:

  • Cutting grass, trimming edges, and blowing trimmings
  • Spraying and dusting areas to control insects and/or weeds
  • Pruning and trimming plants, trees, and shrubs for growth and aesthetics
  • Moving and installing soil, mulch, or other ground covers
  • Planting and seeding plants, trees, grasses, and shrubs
  • Watering lawns, trees, and plants using hoses or watering cans
  • Operating power equipment including, but not limited to, lawn mowers, line trimmers, blowers, hedge trimmers, and pruning saws
  • Operating hand tools such as shovels, rakes, pruning saws, saws, and hedge and brush trimmers
  • Cleaning up refuse
  • Wearing appropriate personal protective equipment and complying with all company policies and regulations
  • Communicating with guests in a polite and courteous manner
  • Providing direction and guidance to volunteers
  • Performing other duties as necessary

Qualifications

  • Student currently attending college or graduate school in a related field of study
  • Experience with landscape services in a commercial setting preferred
  • Knowledge of basic hand and power tools
  • Able to stand, bend, climb, and/or walk for a prolonged period of time
  • Capable of lifting up to 50 pounds
  • Sensitive to safety and security procedures
  • Communicates effectively and interacts genuinely with people of all backgrounds and abilities
  • Shows initiative and is able to meet deadlines with attention to details
  • Works independently or cooperatively as a team
  • Enjoys working in a fast-paced, high traffic, public environment
  • Understands and shows commitment to the mission, vision, and values of CMSD
