Make Your Own Chalk Paint

June 24, 2025

Your next sunny outdoor activity could be fueled by last summer’s chalky remains.

Give your old sidewalk chalk a second life with this easy at home activity.

Don’t throw out that old bucket full of chalk bits just yet! Turn it into an afternoon of fun by making homemade chalk paint. It’s part recycling, part science experiment, and all fun.

Gather Your Supplies:

  • Sidewalk chalk
  • A baggie and a hammer
  • A cup or bowl
  • Water
  • A paintbrush

Let’s Make Paint!

  1. Pop your chalk pieces into the baggie and give them a gentle (but satisfying) smash with the hammer until they’re a fine powder.
  2. Pour the colorful dust into your bowl or cup.
  3. Add a splash of water and stir it up until you get a paint-like consistency.
  4. Head outside, dip your brush, and let the painting begin!

Hey, Grown-ups—This One’s for You, Too!

Chalk paint isn’t just for the kids. Help turn your driveway into a mini playground with these playful ideas:

  • Draw a hopscotch grid—but add goofy challenges like “do a chicken dance” or “hop on one foot while singing…”
  • Design a driveway trail for toy cars or bikes—add stop signs and detours for extra fun
  • Create a chalk obstacle course with loops to jump in, lines to balance on, and stars to spin inside
