Looking for a simple recipe for play?

Moonsand is a favorite at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota. Kids and adults LOVE the way it feels.

Have you ever wanted to build a sandcastle in your home? Even if you don’t live anywhere near a beach, it’s possible! You just need a few kitchen ingredients.

Children and adults love to play with moonsand and it’s super easy to make. Lauren has the low-down on how to make moonsand in the following video:

Here’s the recipe. It’s pretty simple really!

Ingredients

2 cups of brown sugar

1/2 cup of cooking oil

1 cup of corn starch

1 medium-sized mixing bowl

1 mixing spoon (optional)

1 small container with a lid

Directions

  1. Pour 2 cups of brown sugar into a mixing bowl. Feel the sugar between your hands. What does it feel like?
  2. Add 1 cup of corn starch, mix well with your hands or a spoon.
  3. Start by adding two tablespoons of oil. Mix well. Then continue adding one tablespoon of oil at a time and mixing until your moonsand becomes moldable. What does your moonsand feel like?
  4. Now we’re onto the best part- It’s time to play! Add tools, sand molds, rocks, or any other items you’d like to explore with moonsand.

Store your moonsand in a container with a lid. If you find that your moonsand has dried out over time, add a little more oil before you play along again.
