Let’sTie-Dye!
Prep your space. Cover your work surface to protect it from stains.
Dampen the fabric. Lay your shirt flat and lightly spray both sides with water.
Choose your design. Twist, fold, scrunch, or roll the fabric into your desired pattern.
This t-shirt has been twisted and rubber-banded and is ready for Tie-Dye! You can twist, fold, or scrunch, yours any way you like.
Secure it. Use rubber bands to hold your design in place.
Add the color. Put on gloves and apply dye to different sections of the shirt. Mix and match colors to create a bold design.
Apply the dye in whatever order you choose. Rubberbands can be great ways to partition off the sections.
6. Flip and repeat. Turn the shirt over and add dye to the other side until all sections are covered.
7. Let the magic happen. Place the shirt in a plastic bag or wrap it in plastic and let it sit for 48 hours.
8. Rinse and reveal. Machine wash the shirt in cold water until most of the excess dye is removed.
9. Wash it out. Machine wash the shirt in warm water with detergent. Repeat if needed until the water runs clear and the shirt no longer bleeds color.
10. Show it off. Dry your shirt and enjoy wearing your colorful creation!
Why It’s Play
Tie-dye is all about experimenting and having fun with color and patterns. Children can twist, scrunch, and fold their shirts in different ways, then choose colors and see what happens when they come together on the fabric. Part of the excitement is not knowing exactly how the finished design will look until the shirt is rinsed and unfolded.
Every creation is unique, and kids love seeing their ideas come to life in a wearable piece of art. The process encourages creativity, curiosity, and confidence while giving children the freedom to make something that is entirely their own.
It’s messy, colorful, and full of discovery—just like play should be!
Ready to Add Even More Color?
Here are a few playful ways to keep the fun going:
Try different folding techniques and compare the patterns they create.
Ask children to predict what their design will look like before unfolding it, then compare their predictions to the final result.
Create matching shirts with friends or family members.
Experiment with other cotton items like tote bags, bandanas, or pillowcases.
