BROOKINGS, SD – The Children’s Museum of South Dakota was featured as one of the “3 must-see museums for the younger set” in the December 23rd issue of the Chicago Tribune. The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, the world’s largest children’s museum, and Philadelphia’s Please Touch Museum were also named in the article.

Suzanne Hegg, Executive Director of the Children’s Museum of South Dakota, stated that “The Children’s Museum of South Dakota is a gem situated in the heartland of rural America, a fact that surprises and amazes most guests. Being recommended as a ‘must see’ children’s museum together with long standing, urban museums at Indianapolis and Philadelphia is significant recognition for our young museum.

Our founders, the Pat and Dale Larson family, wanted to build a world-class museum — one that sparked imagination and learning, that positively impacted economic development in the region, and that enhanced the quality of life for children and their grownups. All indicators suggest that the museum is exceeding those expectations and verify that ‘dreaming big’ is a powerful driving force.

Competing well with ‘the big boys’ is great fun for this small town, rural children’s museum that dared to believe it could be world class!”

Brookings Mayor, Tim Reed, said “This is tremendous exposure for both the museum and our city. This type of exposure can’t be bought. Since the opening of the Children’s Museum of South Dakota in 2010, the city has seen an increase in a new demographic — the family tourist — many of which are out-of-state visitors from a 3+ hour drive radius. We welcome visitors to come experience all that Brookings has to offer. Brookings truly is a place to “Bring Your Dreams”.

The writer who authored the feature for the Chicago Tribune came to South Dakota last August as a participant in the Travel Media Showcase, hosted by the Sioux Falls Convention and Visitors Bureau. She was intrigued by the Children’s Museum of South Dakota, and her visit there sparked the idea for writing a travel story about children’s museums.

The museum, which has entertained guests from every state in the United States and countries world-wide, is South Dakota’s only children’s museum and consistently draws new visitors to the city of Brookings and to the state.

Since 1847, the Chicago Tribune has been Chicago’s most trusted newspaper, and its preferred source for news, sports, and entertainment information. The printed newspaper is read by 2+ million people on Sundays and the online version has 4+ million views per day.

The museum has also received numerous awards and accolades including Midwest Living’s Top 25 Places to Stay, Eat & Play for 2012.
