Summer is for exploration, whether it is far away or in your own backyard.

Classes and camps keep children busy during summer break.

During the summer, the prairie in the backyard at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota comes to life in a whole new way. With so many places to explore, the Museum is a great destination for a staycation or a place to bring your out-of-town guests.

Here are some ways the Museum can help get you and your family out of your regular routine and let your imagination soar, all while staying close to home:

  • Explore with your little one during Mini Maker classes on weekday mornings. Participants will make their own take-home play kits. Activities change weekly ranging from play-dough and music to puzzle play and dinosaurs.
  • Take part in Café Coteau’s Table Series featuring global cuisine on Thursday evenings in July. Or, just stop by the café for SDSU ice cream or a Café Glacé.
  • The outdoor prairie, stream, and splash pad are great places to relax and play. (Don’t forget to visit with Mama T. Rex, though!)
  • Practice your casting skills on the fishing pond. The fish are always biting the first two open hours of every day (except Mondays) and the stories are hard to beat.
  • Afternoons from 1-4 p.m. the second floor of the museum features bonus exhibits and offers guests a chance to make, tinker, and play in our Maker Studio.
  • Enjoy our final summer with Tangle Town, our outdoor installation built by artist Patrick Dougherty with help from volunteers and museum staff. Featuring six tons of saplings, it’s a great place to create a home, play hide and seek, or just touch, feel, and explore.

If you have a child you are trying to keep busy this summer, try some of our drop-off programming:

  • Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Science Camp (STEAM) for children age 6-12, takes place July 15-19 and August 12-16. Activities range from animation, coding, and robotics to painting, aeronautics, and Rube Goldberg machines and they will certainly keep your child busy.
  • A day-long camp featuring circuitry and robotics takes place on Tuesday, July 30, for 8-12-year-olds.
  • Daily drop-off classes on weekdays (except Mondays) feature Make-n-Take activities like the pottery wheel, Shrinky Dinks, and screen printing.

Registration information for classes and camps is available via the website calendar. View our hours and admission.
