PIERRE, SD — Brookings resident Pouran Borchardt was recognized by Gov. Dennis Daugaard and the South Dakota Department of Tourism with a Ruth Ziolkowski Outstanding Hospitality & Customer Service Award on Thursday, Jan. 18.
Pouran is the café manager at Café Coteau, located inside the Children’s Museum of South Dakota.
In presenting the award, Gov. Daugaard, standing with Ziolkowski’s daughters Monique and Jadwiga Ziolkowski, talked about Pouran’s uncanny ability to make a personal connection with every person she encounters. She was recognized for her genuine concern for her customers and co-workers and going above and beyond to make sure she’s providing healthy delicious food options and excellent customer service.
“Pouran’s influence has helped establish the roots for creating meaningful connections and never-forgotten memories that we all strive to follow each and every day at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota,” says Executive Director Kate Treiber. “We are excited that she was honored for her work.”
This is the first year that the award, which recognizes individuals who provide remarkable service and demonstrate an outstanding spirit of hospitality, has been given at the South Dakota Governor’s Conference on Tourism.
“I am so honored to be part of such a fantastic organization. I love people. And I love to serve them good food,” said Borchardt upon accepting the award.
The conference, which took place Jan. 16-18, is intended for those who work in the tourism and hospitality industry and brought well over 500 people from South Dakota together in Pierre to network and understand the many issues facing the South Dakota visitor industry. Tourism is the state’s second largest industry and had an economic impact of $2.6 billion in 2017.

The Children’s Museum of South Dakota, located in Brookings, SD, promotes learning for children of all ages and abilities through interactive, informal, hands-on exhibits and demonstrations.
