Maintenance and Landscape Technician

Status: Full-time, hourly (some weekend availability preferred). Flexible scheduling.

Reports to: Maintenance Manager

Job Summary:
In alignment with the Museum’s mission, vision, and values, the Maintenance and Landscape Technician helps ensure a clean, safe, and functional environment both indoors and outdoors for the guests of the Children’s Museum of South Dakota. The ideal candidate will be a responsible, self-directed, creative individual that enjoys working in a playful, team-oriented environment.

Essential Functions:

The Maintenance and Landscape Technician’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

Supports Maintenance Operations by

  • doing general facility repairs such as painting, patching walls, hanging shelves, etc.
  • assisting with repairs to exhibits
  • documenting repairs to both facility and exhibits
  • assisting with setup and teardown for special events
  • maintaining a guest focus while performing duties

Supports Landscape Operations by

  • cutting grass, trimming edges, and blowing trimmings
  • spraying and dusting areas to control insects and/or weeds
  • pruning and trimming plants, trees, and shrubs for growth and aesthetics
  • moving and installing soil, mulch, or other ground cover
  • planting and seeding plants, trees, grasses, and shrubs
  • watering lawns, trees, and plants using hoses or watering cans
  • operating power equipment including, but not limited to, lawnmowers, line trimmers, blowers, hedge trimmers, pruning saws, and snow blowers
  • operating hand tools such as shovels, rakes, pruning saws, saws, and hedge and brush trimmers
  • removing snow and ice from walkways
  • cleaning up refuse
  • wearing appropriate personal protective equipment and complying with all company policies and regulations
  • communicating with guests in a polite and courteous manner
  • providing direction and guidance to volunteers

Supports Custodial Operations by

  • assisting Head Custodian with regular cleaning (mopping, vacuuming, dusting, washing)
  • assisting with weekly deep cleaning
  • supporting the weekend cleaning as needed

Qualifications:

  • Two years of experience in mechanical and facilities maintenance, carpentry, or a related field preferred
  • Experience using commercial cleaning products and equipment preferred
  • Knowledge of basic hand and power tools
  • Able to stand, bend, climb, and/or walk for a prolonged period
  • Capable of lifting up to 50 pounds
  • Sensitive to safety and security procedures
  • Must communicate clearly with other team members, follow directions, and ask questions if needed
  • Exhibit a positive attitude and ability to work cooperatively with other team members
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, high traffic, public environment
  • Demonstrated experience in critical thinking and problem solving
  • Understands and shows commitment to the mission, vision, and values of CMSD
