Spark Your Imagination this Summer
The summer at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota is dedicated to inspiring a love of learning. Just because school is out it doesn’t mean that learning stops! Family-style and drop-off programming starts June 5 running through August 17, so start scheduling your summer today!
Brand new this year is a STEAM Camp for children age 5-12. The camp will offer opportunities to explore science, technology, engineering, art and math with a variety of activities. Every day holds a new adventure. Campers might be agents saving the city from toxic popcorn or scientists designing a robot that doodles. They also can be part of a team working on STEAM challenges in both our museum exhibits and the Maker Studio. Similar sessions of STEAM Camp are offered June 18-22 and July 23-27 from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Cost is $225 and registration is required. Campers will need to bring their own lunch.
Children age 5-12 are invited to take part in a weekly Make-N-Take. Explore a new activity such as the pottery wheel, screen printing, canvas painting, and mini bots each week. Make-n-Take is a drop-off program that takes place Tuesdays through Fridays from 10:30 a.m. to noon and costs $5 a session. Check our website calendar for each week’s activity and a link to register. Registration is limited.
Mini Makers takes place Tuesdays through Fridays from 10:45 to 11:30 a.m. for children (age 2-5) and a caregiver. Participants will make their own take-home play kit. Examples of kits featured include play-dough, finger paint, fizzy bubbles, and more. The kit changes weekly. Register for each $5 session via our website calendar. Registration is limited.
Keep an eye on our website calendar or sign up for our e-newsletter to learn about one-off activities that are bound to pop up. First up is a Mystery Dinner Theater, based on the board game Guess Who? that takes place on Thursday, June 14, from 5:15 to 7:30 p.m. for youth age 8-12. Cost is $25 including dinner. Advance registration is required.

Weekdays: 1 to 4 on the Second Floor
If you are coming to explore the museum, we are featuring bonus programming from “1 to 4 on the Second Floor” each weekday starting June 5.
Play Dates for ages 2-5 offers hands-on experiences to fuel imagination and embrace a sense of wonder. A Family Maker Studio for ages 5 and up offers a space where children and families can make, tinker, and play. The education team will be on hand to help translate your ideas into one-of-a-kind creations. Or, you can take part in a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) challenge. In “More to Do in 202” the entire family can explore favorite past exhibits and new ways to play.
A variety of special programming takes place each weekend. Play Dates, designed for children age 2-5, supports the natural curiosity in toddlers and preschoolers takes place each Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Open Studio will take place each Saturday from 2-4 p.m. to explore the many different languages of art such as clay, paper marbling, and printmaking. It is a great chance to explore unique materials as a family.
Sundays are for science. Ignite your senses and your sense of wonder with hands-on experiments and explorations on Science Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m.
