A major milestone was reached Thursday, May 28, 2015 by the Children’s Museum of South Dakota as they welcomed their 500,000th guest.

In less than five years, the Museum has welcomed guests from all over the world and has become a destination location for travelers as well as those much closer.

The Olseth-Sterling Family of Lennox, SD visited the Museum to have some fun. But when they arrived, the celebration really began.

“I had the day off and was just looking for something to do with the kids,” Cathy Olseth said. “We almost didn’t go because it was supposed to rain. I thought ‘what the heck, let’s just go and if it’s raining they have stuff inside.’

Upon arrival, the family was notified of their good fortune by a crowd of Museum Board Members, staff, and Museum Mascot Kidoodle.

“I was so surprised. I’m usually horrible at winning things,” Olseth said with a smile.

They will help turn on exhibits, learn how things work, and even help wake up Mama T.Rex and her son Max. They’ll be treated to a buffet breakfast from Café Coteau located in the Museum and have private play time just for themselves and their party, as well as surprises from the gift shop, and a Reciprocal Family Membership valid at approximately 200 Museums nationwide.

A first-time Museum guest, Olseth will be returning with her family in the future to celebrate and have fun as her kids are “having a blast.”

“This has been an exciting occasion for all involved,” Executive Director Kate Treiber said. “What an honor it has been to share our museum with a half-million guests and we can’t wait to welcome each and every person who visits in the future.”
