CMSD Opens a New, One-of-a-Kind Exhibit

Date: Jun 25, 2013

BROOKINGS, SD - The Children’s Museum of South Dakota opens its first new outdoor exhibit since its grand opening almost three years ago. The museum’s ‘Fishing Pond’ is stocked and ready for some anglers. This new, custom, one-of-a-kind exhibit is sure to make a splash with the visitors to the museum.

This unique exhibit was brought to life by the museum’s Director of Exhibits, Olivia Isenberg, who has been working on the testing and implementation of the exhibit for almost a year.

Suzanne Hegg, Chief Executive Officer of the Children’s Museum of South Dakota said, “It takes time to find the right fabricator to work on a concept that has never been done to the level of realism that our exhibit has. Other museums have fishing experiences that are typically indoors with fabric and velcro fish or small plastic fish to catch. We wanted our exhibit to be a life-like experience.”

The “catch and release” exhibit is part of the museum’s 1.5 acre outdoor prairie play and features poles for the older kids and nets for the little ones, giving children of all ages a chance to experience the exhibit. The fish species are authentic to the region and feature bottom feeders as well as fish that swim near the surface.

The hungry fish will be biting daily from 11-12noon, 1-2pm, 3-4pm now thru the fall months.
